Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Now in Johnson County!

dolly partonIn celebration of 4-H Alumna, Dolly Parton’s 78th birthday, on January 19th, Johnson County 4-H is spotlighting the Imagination Library Program!

In 1995, Dolly Parton first launched, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee. Dolly’s vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families.

The new program gave each child a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age appropriate books directly to their homes, Dolly wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, the program would ensure that every child from birth to age five would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

“Since Kansas became the first state outside of Tennessee to join Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program nearly two decades, roughly 4 million free books have gone into the hands of Kansas children. More recently, the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation partnered with the Imagination Library to mail free books to kids and families inside the district. Now, every child in Kansas 5 years old and younger will be able to enroll in the country music legend’s free book delivery program.”
