Find Your Fun in 4-H

October is my favorite month of the year! It might be because it is my birth month, the leaves are turning colors or because it's a start to a new 4-H year.
All of those items are reasons to celebrate, but the fact nearly 700 youth and their families are eagerly looking forward to another project, demonstration, and leadership opportunities within the 4-H youth development program amazes me!

If you have questions about 4-H and how it works I invite you and your loved ones to attend our Project Fair on Saturday, October 11, 2014 from 1 – 2 p.m. at the Johnson County Extension Office. This is a time where our 4-H youth have tables set up with their project work, and they provide feedback along with answering questions about what it takes to be successful in a project.
Projects which have been represented in the past include:
- plant science,
- forestry,
- foods and nutrition,
- rocketry,
- reading,
- knitting,
- public speaking,
- photography, and
- goats.
With over 30 projects to choose from, and even a self-determined category, the 4-H program can accommodate a wide variety of interests.
In the self-determined category, youth are able to create a project by developing the what, why, when, where, who and how into an action plan designed by and for the member. A self-determined project might be a new or different project, or an expansion of a traditional project. A few of the self-determined projects which have been done in the county in the past include:
- bicycling,
- Legos,
- bee keeping,
- entrepreneurship, and
- sailing.
Johnson County 4-H youth development has many different avenues for youth to become engaged in their own individual passion. Our mission is to grow our youth into tomorrow's leaders. If you are still curious, I urge your family to come learn more and experience for yourself the fun of 4-H at our Project Fair.
