Pick your Project! Johnson County 4-H Project Video Guides and Coping with COVID

Each year, our 4-H Youth Development Program hosts a Project Fair. This event is intended to help members and perspective members learn more about all the projects available within the program. It is also a great way for youth to practice their public speaking and presentation skills with an active audience. Like all countywide events, the project fair was also a time to help make relationships between clubs and families at the county level and increase the networking within the programs and the entirety of the 4-H Program.

However, in the year 2020, like the majority of all in-person events and activities, the project fair was cancelled due to concerns of health and safety with the spread of COVID-19. This meant our 4-Hers had to get creative in the ways they shared their passion projects. With the help and coordination from our talented extension staff, 4-Hers were able to create project talk videos. In creating these videos, the 4-Hers could still have the experience of a public demonstration and others could still learn about the project despite being in a in a socially distanced world.

Although the 2021 project fair was able to happen in person, these project videos are still extremely valued for new families wanting to learn more about the projects. 4-Hers continue to produce them to share their passion and gain the presentation experience. What started as a way to adapt to a less than ideal situation has become another great project and support piece for Johnson County 4-H Youth Development.
