Beginning Beekeeping

For beginner beekeepers, one of the best places to start is by joining a beekeeping organization. There are a few in the Johnson County area:

Northeastern Kansas Beekeeper’s Association

Kansas Honey Producers Association

Midwestern Beekeeper’s Association

Fall and winter are good times to start preparing for spring bee season. Research suppliers, needed equipment, and potential hive sites. The University of Missouri has a guide with Beekeeping Tips for Beginners.

Also check local ordinances to make sure there aren’t regulations or rules for your area regarding beekeeping. Some cities that do have beekeeping ordinances are listed in Beekeeping in the Suburbs.

Advanced Beekeeping

Contact our office if you have advanced beekeeping questions. We also have K-State entomology specialists to help find you answers.
