Improving Memory

Return to Home and Family Agent Articles

A common misconception about the aging brain is that there is nothing that may be done to improve memory and that new information cannot be learned. Often simple lapses in memory or decline in recall speed are mistaken for dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Our brains help us to interact with the world, understand, analyze and respond to our surroundings. So a healthy brain is important to our survival, growth and success. We often take the importance of keeping our brains healthy and in good working order for granted. A healthy brain is better able to remember and keep those important memories for a lifetime.

Exercising our brains
We need to exercise our brains to make sure they are performing at optimal speed and output! Kind of like taking care of a car, we need to make sure we are fueling up with good healthy foods and giving it the proper exercise to keep it running. Exercise can be thought of in two ways. One way to exercise your brain is to do physical activity. Walking, dancing, gardening, and playing with kids and grandkids keep us moving and active.

Another way to exercise your mind is through mental stimulation. The first thing we think of are games and puzzles, like a word search, crossword or Sudoku. We can also stimulate our minds by reading a book, writing or journaling, taking a new class, engaging in our favorite hobbies or just getting out of our house and exploring something new. Mental exercise can stimulates and enhance brain cell connections and even delay the onset of some types of dementia.
