Becoming an Extension Master Naturalist
If you have a love of nature, want to improve your skills and knowledge of Kansas natural resources and like to work with people, the EMN program may be for you. 
EMNs are trained and certified in Kansas Natural Resource concepts. They, in turn, give voluntary service in a variety of ways that utilize their training.
EMNs provide information to the public based on research-based information, and provide educational program assistance in support of county extension and other educational programs. Extension Master Naturalist volunteers may not participate in the Extension Master Naturalist Program for personal gain or for commercial recommendations or endorsements.
Who Can Apply?
Any resident of Johnson County, Kansas, or the greater Kansas City metro area, age 18 or over, with a high school diploma or equivalent, who has an interest in natural resources can apply.
When Can I Apply?
Applications for the Class of 2024 have closed. Participants have been selected and notified. If you are interested in receiving an application for the next class, please contact Tracy.Hemsath@jocogov.org to be added to the notification list. Let us know how you heard about the program.
When is the training?
Once accepted, EMNs participate in 40 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction in natural resource concepts. Training classes are on Wednesday evenings from 6-9 PM, January - April with some field trips in April. Most of the training classes are in person at the Extension office in Olathe, with the rare occasion of one or two classes presented virtually, depending on the needs of the presenters. Classes in the training include:
- Botany
- Entomology
- Ecology
- Mammals
- Forestry
- Ornithology
- Interpretation
- Geology
- Bats and Herpetology
How much does it cost?
There is a fee of $135 which covers the cost of training materials and instruction and supports programming from the Johnson County Extension Master Naturalists. Some financial scholarships are available, email Tracy at Tracy.Hemsath@jocogov.org to inquire.
What Happens After Training is Completed?
Following basic training, EMNs continue their education with 10 hours of advanced training annually. In exchange for training, individuals are required to return a minimum of 30 hours a year of volunteer service on approved environmental activities that benefit the community.
