Renters Insurance
Return to Home and Family Agent Articles
As you pack your college students off for great learning adventures on campus, or move your young adult starting a new career into their first apartment, don’t forget to talk to them buying renters insurance.
As with any insurance, it may be difficult to decide exactly the type and amount of coverage to purchase. Deal with insurance professionals you trust. Compare a number of quotes. This purchasing process is another opportunity to reinforce the life skill of good decision making with your young adult.
Bret Eisenbarth of Kansas State University's Powercat Financial Services offers a wealth of information about choosing and using renters insurance in his article What to bring to college: Renters insurance can help protect against theft, damage .
I especially like Eisenbarth’s recommendation to complete an in-depth inventory of personal property before choosing a policy. Note the value and the serial number, if available, of each item. It is easy with today’s technology to take a photograph of every item and mark the photo with the value of the item, to help determine exactly how much coverage is needed.
The K-State Research and Extension publication Get Financially Prepared: Take Steps Ahead of a Disaster shares several ways to prepare an electronic inventory, including photos.
Insurance is designed to minimize risk and bring peace of mind. But only if you take advantage of this resource.
