Fertilize Strawberries in August
Fertilizing strawberries in August will result in a bountiful crop of luscious berries next spring. As the daylight hours dwindle and temperatures grow cooler in the fall, fruit buds for next season’s crop will develop. Fertilizer applied in August promotes increased root growth and, therefore, larger plants. The result will be an increase in the number of blooms to produce more strawberries next year.
Examples and rates of fertilizers to use for this application include the following:
- 13-13-13 at the rate of 5 pounds per 100-foot row.
- Ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) at the rate of 3 pounds per 100-foot row.
After spreading the fertilizer over the strawberry bed, plants will require at least one half inch of water to move the fertilizer into the strawberry plants’ roots for optimum uptake.
